When a call keeps breaking up

A translated call needs a steadier connection than an ordinary one: every sentence has to reach the translation service and come back. Here is what the call screen tells you and what actually helps.

What the call screen tells you

  • Weak connection: the call is still going, but audio may stutter and translation may lag.
  • Reconnecting…: the connection dropped and the app is trying to restore it. Stay on the screen; it usually comes back by itself.
  • When no direct route between the two phones works, the call goes through a relay so it can still connect. You do not need to do anything for that.

Quick fixes, in order

  • Move closer to the Wi‑Fi router, or switch from a weak Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or the other way round).
  • Turn off video: voice alone needs far less of the connection.
  • Close apps that are uploading or streaming in the background.
  • Ask the other person to do the same: a call is only as good as the weaker side.

Help the translation along

  • Speak in short sentences and pause after each one.
  • Take turns; two people talking at once is the hardest case even on a good line.
  • Find a quiet spot: background noise makes recognition worse, and a weak line makes noise worse.

When to stop trying

If the call keeps dropping after a couple of attempts, switch to voice messages or text. They are translated too, and they arrive complete even over a poor connection. Agree the important points in writing and call again when one of you is on a better network.

Questions

Does translation work offline?

No. Translation needs an internet connection on both phones.

Is a relayed call less private?

A call without translation between phones that support it stays end-to-end encrypted whichever way the media travels: the relay carries data it cannot decrypt.
