The short version
- Chats are end-to-end encrypted with the Signal Protocol: messages, photos, files, voice messages, locations and contact cards. The server stores and delivers copies it cannot read.
- A call without translation between two phones that support it is end-to-end encrypted too.
- Translation is the exception. It happens in the cloud, not on the phone, so a translated message, voice message or call is not private between the two of you alone.
- Creating an account needs no phone number, email or name.
- No ads, and no third-party analytics or tracking in the app.
Two kinds of encryption, kept apart
Every connection to AiThao is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS). That protects data on its way, but the server at the other end can still read it. End-to-end encryption is different: the content is locked on your phone for the other person’s phone, and the server only ever holds a copy it cannot open.
This section says which of the two applies to each part of AiThao, instead of calling everything “encrypted”.
What the server can see
Even with end-to-end encryption, a messenger’s server needs some information to deliver messages: who wrote to whom and when, how large a message is, whether it was delivered and read, and which message a reply points to. AiThao’s server sees this, and not the content.
Questions
Is AiThao end-to-end encrypted?
Chats are, and so are calls without translation between phones that support it. Translated messages and translated calls are not, because translation happens in the cloud. The pages in this section explain each case.
