Your first conversation across languages

You have AiThao, and so does the person you want to talk to, but you do not share a language. Here is how a first conversation goes, from adding each other to a translated call.

1. Choose your language

Each person sets their own language in the app. That is the language AiThao translates into for you, and the other person does the same on their side. You never need to know which language they chose: you write in yours, they read in theirs.

2. Add each other

Share your username or AiThao Number, or let the other person scan your QR code if you are together. If they write to you first and are not in your contacts yet, their message arrives as a request that you accept.

3. Start with a short message

Write one or two simple sentences. When a message arrives in a language you do not read, it is translated for you and the original stays visible. The first time a message is translated, the app tells you that translation happens in the cloud; you can turn it off in Settings if you prefer.

4. Try a voice message

When typing is slow, record a voice message instead. The other person gets your recording, its text and a spoken translation. Keep each voice message to one idea; several short ones translate better than one long one.

5. Call when you are both ready

Start a call and turn on translation. It begins once both of you agree. Take turns, pause after each sentence, and let the translation finish before answering. In some languages the translation is spoken; in others it appears as subtitles.

6. Finish in writing

If you agreed on a time, an address or an amount, send it again as a short message and ask the other person to confirm. Automatic translation is good for conversation, but details that matter deserve a second check.

Questions

Do we both need to set a language?

Yes. Each person’s language decides what they read and hear, so both of you should check it before the first call.

What if the translation sounds wrong?

Say it again more simply, or write it. The guide on translation mistakes shows how to check what matters.

The web demo lets you try AiThao before the app is out. AiThao is waiting for Apple’s approval to appear in the App Store; there is no install link yet.
